Navajo Transitional Energy Company, (NTEC), operates a surface coal mine in northwest New Mexico serving a major power plant and has exciting paid summer internships. This internship is for summer 2025.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct vegetation surveys.
- Conduct land stability surveys on reclaimed lands.
- Collect and prepare air, surface, water, ground water, and soil samples for laboratory analysis.
- Use GPS/GIS to prepare maps, facilitate field data collection and analyze data.
- Prepare reports, share data results and develop recommendations to improve the program.
- Conduct surveys of rehabilitated mine lands to evaluate landform stability and success of re-vegetation.
- Develop communication skills (written, oral and presentation formats) with all levels of the organization.
- Comply with MSHA regulations, safety practices at the mine, identify and report any safety hazards to the supervisors or managers, and complete proper reporting as necessary.
Necessary Qualifications:
- 2.75 cumulative GPA with a 3.25 GPA in major.
- Enrolled in a science program in pursuit of an Associate of Science or a Bachelor of Science degree.
- Ability to work outdoors and traverse uneven ground up to 6-8 hours a day.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for the purpose of preparing and presenting information.
- Build trust by meeting commitments and delivering on expected targets, even when faced with difficult, adverse, or time-constrained situations.
- Ability to prioritize projects and self-motivated to generate creative solutions and oversee the execution.
- Possess a valid State driver’s license and maintain an insurable driving record.
- Any offer of employment is conditioned on the passing of a background check, and drug test, and verification of eligibility to work in the United States.
Majors: Environmental Sciences, Biology, Geology, Hydrology, Wildlife, Botany, Horticulture, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Engineering, Range Science.
Preferred: GIS experience. Course work and experience in plant identification, vegetation sampling, soil sampling, and water sampling.
